516 - Leyden

the country turned its back on the sun -
the Chilterns vale ended - the plain widened
toward Oxford and the train made its run
to Banbury. what had cleared was the Leyden

Jar sky that had hung all day and refused
to discharge more than showers on London.
the children were taken round the purlieus
of Westminster and the conundrum

of Soho and Chinatown - and spent time
with their grandmother. a day so complete
is able to let go into the lime
coloured night - and then get repeated

in years to come as memory’s lustre.
twilight - the best day memory musters.
