583 - A St Ann Fugue

before any such tree was introduced
this St Ann’s was planted - a copper beech -
to blush pink whenever the sun is loosed
or grow dark as wine when cloud reaches

over her. St Ann - for her daughter
downstream - before Reform changed the Name
to Trinity. there she is still psaltered
collected and communioned the same

after 800 years this St Ann fugue
barely now - village having long withdrawn.
she stands before Cherwell’s deluges
is always waiting ahead of dawn

not in the Bible but in our hearts
where Mary Jesus and the Cherwell start.
